I’ve been rewatching old Star Trek episodes, and I’ve realized that their version of the future seems really nice. They live in a post-scarcity civilization, where things like the separation of races, nations and economic classes are a thing of the past. Humanity is part of a multi-species peaceful interstellar federation whose primary focus is scientific exploration and advancements, not conquest through war.
So I just hope our future is more Star Trek rather than Mad Max. Here’s a great little excerpt from an episode I saw recently.
“The economy of the future is somewhat different. You see, money doesn’t exist in the 24th century.”
“No money? You mean you don’t get paid?”
A lot has changed in the past 300 years, people are no longer obsessed with the accumulation of things. We have eliminated hunger, want, and the need for possessions. We’ve grown out of our infancy.
The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in our lives. We work to better ourselves, and the rest of humanity.
