Fair greetings, dear reader. Welcome to my second entry of atomic essay. Please, make yourself comfortable, because as the title suggests, I'm going to rant in a well-mannered way concerning Kominfo's latest controversy. A couple of days ago at the 30th of July, Kominfo blocked multiple sites. Now, if we're talking about small, sketchy sites, we wouldn't really have a problem about it, but these lovely folks blocked massive corporation sites with millions of daily user including Steam, Epic Games, and even PayPal. Naturally, the impact is quite catastrophic, especially towards freelancers. VPN may help to access these sites, but to make transaction within these sites, you would have to turn off your VPN or else it'll prevent you from making any sort of transaction whatsoever. You can't connect to a few online games by using VPN too, so gamers who make money from gaming professionally or streaming can no longer work and have to immediately search for an alternative.
Now, I don't know whether Kominfo's aware of this or not, but let's assume they were, it would have been wiser to let the public acknowledge the fact that they're going to block these sites. If they did, PayPal users could take immediate action to withdraw their money before the block, which would make the masses less hysterical. It's pretty clear that they didn't think of any kind of precaution at all, nor acknowledging the consequences of their action. I've seen literal Kominfo employees address doxxed on Twitter, including Johnny G. Plate, which is something that's equally morally bankrupt. Although, I understood why did they doxx them, it's to send a clear protest as oppose the law. Speaking of the law, the reason that these sites are blocked because they contain "negative content" . I'm uncertain what did they mean by "negative content" when literal gambling sites and NSFW game sites are free of charges only by the reason of these sites are registered already. I think it's pretty clear that they have ulterior motives to the point where they took such measure like exploiting the law depending on the certain circumstance.
Also, by blocking huge gaming sites like Steam and Epic Games, Kominfo inadvertently advocates piracy. Piracy sites like Fitgirl, Skidrow, Steamunlocked, etcetera aren't banned yet, and I doubt that Kominfo is even aware of the existence of such sites. I also personally believe that this policy violates privacy and basic human rights. They spoke highly about local digital products, technology revolution 4.0, yet doesn't understand how the internet actually work. Just a speculation, but I think this happened because of the lack of understanding regarding how communication and information actually works these days, it's kind of ironic. Johnny G. Plate has no past experience that's related to technology, nor communication and information. I do believe that people could always learn regardless of age, but from what we can see, they didn't. There are rumors that the boomer employees would just ask someone else younger who barely has any knowledge regarding the thing that they're asking, usually about technology. But again, those are rumors, no solid evidence concerning it yet.
Alright, I think that's all I had to rant concerning the situation. I sincerely wish that Kominfo will take things like this more cautiously and treat the situation delicately. The press they did at the news were terrible too, one of them even blatantly supported gambling because "it's just a game." Anyway, I hope to see you next time, I promise that I would remain more composure for the next topic. Thank you for reading and uhh I expect this blog to be utterly educational to the point where it moves your patriotic spirit buried inside you and you'll go protest on Twitter to Kominfo's official account knowing that they wouldn't give a grain of attention or something.
