AES#34 The Horror Of Climate Change

Don’t you feel the air is getting hotter these days?  Do you also feel that days are passing by very quickly? Ever wonder why? Apparently, those are the effects of climate change.

Climate change is a change in the pattern of weather, and related changes in oceans, land surfaces and ice sheets, occurring over time scales of decades or longer.

It has a very broad impact on people's lives, for example:

  • Ecosystem damage (land, sea, air).
  • Food requirement problem.
  • Extreme weather and natural disasters
  • Interfere with health and spread of new diseases
  • Pole ice will melt
  • The storm will be more intense and dangerous

Natural Disaster Caused by  Climate Change:

2015 → Forest fires and scorching in Sumatra and Kalimantan more than 2.6 million hectares of land, equivalent to 4.5 times the size of the island of Bali. Although initially man-made, the long dry season made matters worse. Whereas Indonesia's forest itself is a type of tropical forest that is always wet or humid, so it is difficult to burn naturally.

2018 → Unprecedented Flooding in India. Kerala's floods, described as the state's "worst in 100 years," displaced more than 1 million people and killed at least 445 in August. The region saw an unprecedented amount of rainfall 164% more than usual during the first 20 days of the month, according to NASA

2021 → Wildfires in Southern Turkey. This fire incident in Turkey is a series of events from extreme weather that occurs in the world, from deadly floods in Europe and China to raging fires in the United States, Canada, and Siberia that scientists believe are linked to changes in the climate resulting from global warming.

What causes climate change?

  • Logging and burning forests

These acts produce greenhouse gases that can increase the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. It also depletes the ozone which causes a hotter climate.

  • Excessive use of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas

→ This results in poor air quality and increases the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere from carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

  • Marine pollution

→ The oceans can absorb large amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) gas, but due to marine pollution by industrial waste and garbage, the sea cannot absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) gas.

  •  The excess use of artificial fertilizers in industries

→ Artificial fertilizers  release methane (CH4) and nitrogen oxides (N2O) into the atmosphere which causes the greenhouse effect.

  • Minimum education of waste management

→ Garbage that is disposed of in the trash mixed together will produce methane gas which will also produce a greenhouse effect that can have an impact on the atmosphere.

What can we do now?

  • Use renewable energy such as solar panels and wind energy to run the appliances
  • Save energy, turn off the lights when I sleep and turn off the AC when not in use
  • Save water usage
  • Reduce food waste, always buy in moderation

Thank you Tasha! We need to be constantly reminded of these issues inspite of the Pandemic and all that...🙏🏼
