AES119 The Human Problem

Human beings are the most troublesome and irritating creatures on earth. We have ultimate control over the planet’s resources, but no control over ourselves. We have the power and knowledge to solve the problems we are facing in an instant, but choose not to do so. We are capable of living with kindness and compassion for others, but always let hate and prejudice win. If humanity might one day be wiped out from the face of the earth, the answer might be found in the way we think.

The human brain is an amazing organ, containing over 100 billion neurons. It’s able to think in extraordinary ways that no other creatures have done before, capable of reshaping the entire world as we see fit, ever pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. There is a part of the human brain that is primitive, but hugely influences the way we think and make choices, called “The Reptilian Brain”, the “animal” part of us. The Reptilian Brain causes three problems in the way humans think and act;

  1. Tribalism: Humans have always had strong hatred for others that are different from themselves, and tend to use violence and slaughter other foreigners, unable to see that we are all part of one.
  2. Short-Term Thinking: We always make decisions that we see will profit instantly, never looking at the consequences that may happen in the future. We see the future as an unreal and random occurrence, thinking that everything’s fine, even if we know for a fact, that it’s not going to be.
  3. Wishful Thinking: “We prefer to act rather than think, and daydream rather than plan”, we are unwittingly drawn to endless distractions and fantasies. “The brain doesn’t want to know itself”

With our knowledge and god-like power over Earth and its inhabitants growing larger and unchallenged, “Its powers became uncontained while its wisdom remained intermittent and fragile, eventually, its might outpaced its capacity for self-control, Humans became a nuclear armed rodent.”

To save humanity from gradual destruction, we have something that no other beings have; love.

  1. Love of the Stranger: Seeing each other as people worthy of the same mercy and kindness as themselves.
  2.  Love of the Unborn: Caring for those futures we might risk from our own selfish actions.
  3.  Love of the Truth: Accepting and dealing with the truth, no matter how grave. Seeing past all the lies and illusions that are fed to us.

Humans are capable of change. We can decide what kind of future we want for ourselves and others. Let’s shape the future that we want our children and grandchildren to live in. And we can start right now.
