AES105 What Is Talent?

Talent is a pursued interest, in other words,

anything you are willing to practice, you can do.

-Bob Ross-

What do you want to do in life? What are you good at? What is something special that you can bring to the table?

These questions have been asked to me almost every time I meet someone. And I never knew what my answer is to this day.

Everyone I know seems to have something unique that sets them apart from others. They have special interests and talent in all sorts of fields, music, photography, literature, sports, design, art. And all these years, I didn’t know what mine was.

The problem is, I have been capable in every field that I’ve come across. I’ve never been great at them, but I was always good enough. And so I thought that was the reason I wasn’t compelled to pursue those skills further, because I was good enough.

Something I read recently piqued my interest in developing myself further. It takes 10 years to fully master a skill. That means you can master about 5-7 things in life. Those things can define you. And you forge paths you didn’t think possible at first.

Before you can be good at something, you first have to be bad at it. And to slowly better yourself at it, you’re gonna have to spend the most vital commodity of all, time. Every time you practice that skill, you’re going to get a little better, and you’ll enjoy doing it more. Eventually, it will become part of your identity, and who you are to other people.
