AES08 Working from Home

The Covid-19 pandemic has shook the entire world, it changed everything. Suddenly we cannot be in crowds, even being in proximity with other people becomes dangerous. During this time I think all of us spent months or even the entire year at home, and during that time I think the way we think about work has changed.

I think this pandemic has forced many societal changes that would not have happened otherwise. Companies that insisted for decades that everyone needed to come in the office everyday to work, now have been proven wrong. Even though I’m sure there are lots of aspects that would work better if they were performed face to face, there is a surprising amount of work that does not require the traditional clocking in and out of an office everyday. And this pandemic has opened people’s eyes that things can be done as easily from home in this advanced interconnected world we live in.

Artificial inconveniences are a way for companies to have more control over their employees. I don’t think the work routine that has been normalized in our society is healthy. The hours we spend everyday commuting, the small cubicle you sit in all day, staring into a computer for hours, and then going home exhausted, not having any time or energy left other than to rest for the next identical, mundane day. It’s all part of the endless grind, you’re a cog in a machine, you’re not supposed to have time to think about how things could be better.

And since working from home, you don’t need to spend hours of your day sitting in traffic, you can relax and have breakfast in the morning first, your schedules are less rigid, as long as you get your work done at the end of the day. You get to spend more time with your family, you can work in an environment you’re more comfortable in. When Covid-19 slows and restrictions are lifted, people will start going back to the routine they had before, but hopefully with a new understanding that some things can be done differently.
